Multiple WordPress Sites on one Server

Installing multiple WordPress site on any server is really pretty easy. Simply set up a what is called an “Add on Domain” in your control panel. By default a folder is created for each domain. You can simply install WordPress in each of these folders. This works fine for two or three domains, but you’ll soon run into the resource limit of most hosts. A lot of host have unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth, but they all have resource limits. This main resource limit that you’ll run into the file limit. There is a limit on the number of files they allow on any one account. WordPress contains thousands of files and themes also have thousand of file. It does not take to many installations to hit the file limit.

This is where WPSiteStack helps out. All our sites can use one installation for WordPress. All the WordPress file are shared. Plugins and Themes can be shared as well. In short you can easily have dozens of sites hosted on one installation of WordPress.

I’ve been working on a new version of WPSiteStack. It was going to just be a re-branding of the WPMultiSite product, but it’s turning into a total rewrite. Here’s what it looks like so far.

Start Each WordPress Site Clean (no default content)

If you’re tired of deleting the sample about page, post and comment setup as part of the WordPress installation then you might be interested in this simple install option.
To start with a clean install just create a file called ‘install.php’ in the wp-content directory and put the following code in it.

For those of us using WPMultiSite this means that once you add this file then all the future sites built using this wp-content folder will get this feature.
I’m thinking of adding this as an option for WPMultiSite. What do you think?

New Release of WPMultiSite Lite

I just released a new version of WPMultiSite Lite. This is a bug fix release that allows it to be installed on more host configurations.

Also this release allows for longer domain names (the limit has been extended to 256 characters).

WPMultiSite Lite

I’m working on a new lite version of WPMultiSite. This version is much easier to use if you are the only person managing sites. No database will be required. It really is very simple to use. I will probably move some of the code I’m working on there over to the full version to make things easier to use there as well. Before You Install WPMultiSite

Here are some things to consider before installing WPMultiSite.

Permalinks

All site using a single installation of WordPress must use the permalinks. Make sure when you create a new site you set the permalink setting.

Site Maps

If you use the ‘Google XML Sitemaps’ plugin, you can manually set the location of the sitemap file in the plugin configuration.

favicon.ico

All sites will use the same favicon for now.

robots.txt

All sites will use the same robots.txt file for now.
